With a stagnant national economy, Italian manufacturers of air-conditioning, heating and sanitary equipment have changed their focus to the export market. Their investments in quality, automation and maintenance are paying dividends in the expanded Euro economic zone, where improved equipment performance is needed to meet new energy requirements being promulgated by the European Union. As in the U.S., buildings account for about 40% of Europe's energy use. European policy makers in Brussels set a target of a 40% reduction in energy use by 2020, the so called second phase of the Energy Performance of Buildings Directive (EPBD2).
