Seoul's urban fabric is a palimpsest of violence and militarisation, a city colonised by the Japanese from 1910 until the conclusion of the Second World War, and razed to the ground during the Korean War in the 1950s. The conflict with neighbouring North Korea is paused only by an armistice agreed in 1953 and at constant risk of being resumed.
