Disasters Spur Innovation to Ensure Access to Safe Water

In the aftermath of a natural or human-made disaster, one of the most immediate concerns is providing a supply of clean, safe drinking water to survivors to help prevent the occurrence and spread of waterborne diseases. However, providing clean water often involves the availability of energy and technology—two resources that are typically destroyed or severely crippled following a natural disaster. In many underdeveloped areas of the world, these technologies may never have existed to begin with, adding to the challenge of providing disaster relief to displaced and, often, wounded survivors.
