Tinnitus is a widespread condition. According to the American Tinnitus Association, Tinnitus is the perception of sound in the ears or head when no external source is present. It is often described as "ringing in the ears," but can also take the forms of hissing, clicking, roaring or other sounds. Schorr first attributed his tinnitus to 33 years as a pilot which meant constant exposure to loud noise. He later learned that it was not so much the sound of the engines as it was the vibrations they caused. The harmonic vibration caused Schorr's tinnitus. But he was not the only one misinformed. Up until recent years, it was widely believed that tinnitus was a hearing problem, but now, audiologists know that tinnitus is a neurologically-based condition that affects the auditory system.
