摘要

While scanning through the March 1966 issue of the "National AMVET" newspaper looking for a National Archive subject, page 16 made me stop dead in my tracks. Lo and behold, there was a full page of photos of Congressional Life Members of AMVETS. It did not stop there. It continued for another full page and then finally ended with a box on a third. After reading the names and looking at the photos of our congressional representatives from 1966, I was curious as to how many veterans currently serve in Congress today. What I learned was disappointing. According to an article on CNN.com, as of January this year, 115 members of the new Congress — a little more than 20% — have served in the armed forces. In real numbers, that breaks down to 25 members from the Senate and 90 from the House of Representatives. Many have served in World War II and Vietnam.
