The May-June 1968 issue of the "Na tional AMVET" included a letter from Airman George M. Bevich to President Lyndon Johnson, dated July 25, 1966, explain ing the young airman's thoughts on the war in Vietnam and his concerns on the tenor of the nation toward his service and the conflict. Bevich's letter would make its way to the desk of Johnson, who sent a reply. However, Bevich would make the ultimate sacrifice six months af ter sending his letter during an attack on Tan San Nhut Air Base in Vietnam. In his letter, Bevich clarifies why he chose to serve, why he and his brothers-in-arms believed their mission was just, and how he hoped that if those who burned their draft cards could read his letter, it would "make men out of boys."
