With the DC-3, Douglas Aircraft Company turned out a legend that paved the way for profitable commercial aviation, set a new standard in safety, played a decisive roll in winning WWII and the Korean War, and became the proving ground for a new concept in multi-engine attack aircraft two decades later in Southeast Asia. And after all that, it still continues to work for a living to this day - long after all those wars ended. If there was ever a design team that thought 'outside the box' long before that well-worn term ever became popular, this one certainly did!
