Militants Down Egyptian Helicopter

An Egyptian military Mil Mi-8/17 Hip helicopter has been shot down, killing all five on board. The Ansar Bayt al-Maqdi group claimed responsibility for the attack on January 25 and posted a video showing them using a man-portable surface-to-air missile (SAM) to down the helicopter, which crashed in flames near the north Sinai town of Sheikh Zuwayed. The type of SAM used has not been confirmed, but was likely to be a Chinese-built QW-2/FN-6 or Soviet-designed 9K34 Strela-3 (SA-14 Gremlin), 9K310 Igla-1 (SA-16 Gimlet) or 9K38 Igla (SA-18 Grouse).
