PRESERVATION OF SERIALS: A BRIEF REVIEW OF OPTIONS

Preservation is essentially the maintenance of materials for use. Serials, given their importance to scholarly communication and their monetary value, deserve whatever measures are practicable for their preservation. Serials managers can significantly prolong the life expectancy of their collections by understanding and acting on certain basic preservation information. This chapter will review the nature of the most common serials formats, the ways in which library operations affect those formats and recommend possible courses of action for serials managers. It will specifically cover environmental conditions, acquisition concerns, processing procedures, binding methods, shelving and storage conditions, mass deacidification processes, and reformatting options.
