Recent decades have witnessed the rapid development of cross-border tourism worldwide in the context of economic globalization and regional integration, with cooperation becoming increasingly common among many countries in this field. At the same time, many scholars from various countries have made remarkable advancements in the study of cross-border cooperation in tourism. Among these scholars, Timothy should be singled out because he made deeper explorations of the relationship between political borders and tourism based on Matznetter's work. Timothy's great contributions also laid the foundations for later research in the field. This paper aims to grasp the research trends of international cross-border cooperation in tourism as a whole and provide references and insights for practical development and theoretical research in the field in China. We obtained 78 academic articles from the ScienceDirect, Taylor&Francis Online, Emerald, Web of Science, and Wiley Online Library databases, and selected 55 of these articles for analysis. These academic articles were all published after 1995 in many key periodicals, such as Annals of Tourism Research, Tourism Management, Tourism Geographies, Current Issues in Tourism, Journal of Sustainable Tourism, and Asia Pacific Journal of Tourism Research. Our research findings are as follows: First, most foreign literature appears after 2000 and generally shows an increasing trend, although there is an obvious fluctuation each year. Second, qualitative case analysis is one of the main research methods used by most foreign scholars. Of all the 55 articles, 53 involve case studies, more than half of which are distributed in Europe, while others are distributed in Southern Africa, North America, Southeast Asia, East Asia, and the Middle East. Third, a wide range of research perspectives are covered, such as tourism, geopolitics, economic geography, and public management, in addition to other disciplines. Finally, the research contents mainly involve motivations, management, levels, paths, effects, problems, and challenges of cross-border cooperation in tourism. The paper highlights that foreign scholars have reached broad consensus in aspects of cooperative motivation (diversity), cooperative management (complexity), and strategic direction of cooperation (explication). However, some divergences of opinion still exist concerning cooperative management orientation (top-down or bottom-up), cooperative effects (positive or negative), and the development situation of cooperation (de-or re-bordering). Academic research into cross-border cooperation in tourism is still in its infancy in China and therefore lags in comparison with the international literature. In China, however, there is a good opportunity for the development of cross-border cooperation in tourism based on the constructions of the Belt and Road Initiative. Learning from the international research experiences, we suggest that domestic scholars should focus on the following aspects in the study of cross-border cooperation in tourism: (1) the feasibility of cross-border cooperation in tourism;(2) the willingness of stakeholders to cooperate in cross-border tourism; (3) the domestic policies and national conditions of neighboring countries; (4) the construction and management of cross-border tourist destinations; (5) the application of research methods from different disciplines.%在经济全球化和区域一体化背景下,跨境旅游合作研究受到许多国外学者关注,并取得显著成果.为从总体上透视国外跨境旅游合作研究动态,并为国内该领域实践发展和理论研究提供借鉴,文章对1995年以来55篇代表性文献进行梳理和分析.结果发现:国外相关研究文献主要出现在2000年之后并呈增长趋势;研究方法以定性、实证案例研究为主;研究视角涉及旅游、地缘政治、经济地理、公共管理等多门学科;研究内容主要涵盖合作动机、合作管理、合作层次、合作路径、合作效应、问题与挑战6大方面.
