Objective. Since little empirical information is available regarding the attitudes of Chinese people about play, the current study was the first to quantify the meaning of play in a Chinese sample. Method. The semantic differential was employed among 100 Hong Kong parents to assess attitudes towards play. Parenting styles including Authoritarian, Authoritative, and Permissive were also obtained through the Revised Parenting Behavior Questionnaire -- Chinese version (PBQ) along with Big Five personality traits including Openness to Experience, Conscientiousness, Extraversion, Agreeableness, and Neuroticism through the NEO Five Factor Inventory -- Chinese version (NEO-FFI). Results. For the most part, participants in achievement-driven Hong Kong generally held a positive view regarding play. It was also found that attitudes towards play were positively correlated with Authoritative parenting style while negatively associated with Authoritarian parenting style. Significant correlations were also obtained between play evaluations and the personality traits of Conscientiousness and Agreeableness. Discussion. Implications of findings were explored and it is hoped that the results of the current study might shed light on attitudes towards play among Chinese people worldwide.
