The rapid growth of personal mobile communications has generated significant interest in wireless communications research. Technology advances in many areas of wireless communications are needed to satisfy the new, demanding system objectives. These system objectives range from increasing fidelity and capacity of terrestrial systems, to supporting the implementation of the next generation personal satellite communications systems, all while decreasing the weight, size and cost of the mobile terminal. Antennas, being an integral part of any wireless communications system, are one of the key technologies evolving to satisfy the new system requirements.;In this dissertation, four different areas of interest to the antenna engineer have been addressed through a combination of experimentation and numerical analysis. These included the study of diversity reception to mitigate multipath fading, the characterization of operator head effects on the circular polarization purity of a helix antenna, the development of low profile circular polarized antennas for mobile terminal applications and the use of substrate perforation to aid in the integration of printed antennas on high dielectric constant substrates.
