Effects of fixed-point DSP processing on DMT based xDSL applications.

The growth of Internet traffic with data, audio, and video services has made the bandwidth for average computer users' traditional dial-up connections over the POTS the bottleneck. This prompted the development of various access technologies including FTTx, fixed wireless access, and broadband copper access techniques. The xDSL using the existing twisted copper telephone lines is one of the most promising methods to provide high speed access for homes and small businesses in the near future.; This thesis studies the implementation of the xDSL DMT modulated transceiver using a fixed-point DSP running fixed-point algorithms. The effects of the optimal scaling factor to be applied to the DMT coded QAM constellations and the resolution of the DAC become the focal points of this study.; A TI's high speed DSP board, TMS320C6201 EVM, is used to gather the experimental results. However, conclusions are applicable to other fixed-point DSPs.
