In this dissertation, two-section gain-coupled distributed feedback lasers are modeled in a self-consistent manner. The nonlinear-coupled differential equations that govern the behavior of distributed feedback lasers are solved for a two-section cavity using the finite difference method. The model allows the study of the spatiotemporal dynamics of the two-section gain-coupled self-pulsating laser. Two self-pulsating regimes are predicted and confirmed experimentally. The theoretical tuning range and modulation index are also in agreement with the experiment.; A two-section gain-coupled DFB laser is injection locked and used to transmit 155 Mb/s data on a 40 and 60 GHz millimeter-wave carriers in single mode fibers. At 40 GHz, a bit error ratio of 10−10 for −12.3 dBm of received optical power is achieved. A network architecture based on wavelength division multiplexing of shared self-pulsating lasers is proposed for mobile wireless networks. The network provides sharing of sources, increased bandwidth, and an increase in the number of base stations served by a single control station.
