Fusarium head blight (FHB) caused by Fusarium graminearum Schwabe [teleomorph Gibberella zeae (Schweinitz) Petch] is a devastating disease of wheat. A major gene Fhb1 confers resistance to FHB in wheat. Current studies were designed to assess the effects of Fhb1 gene on agronomic and end use quality traits of winter wheat and to evaluate winter wheat genotypes introgessed with Fhb1 gene for agronomic traits for their possible release as cultivar or to be used as parents in further crosses. In the first experiment a population of 42 F3:7 lines consisting of four genotypic classes of winter wheat (i.e., 20 line with Fhb1, 20 lines without Fhb1 and two blends of each of 20 lines) and three check cultivars were compared for the effects of Fhb1 gene on agronomic and end use quality traits. No negative effects of Fhb1 gene were observed. In the second experiment, 21 backcrossed lines containing Fhb1 gene in the background of 'Wesley' along with four check cultivars were evaluated for their agronomic performance in the field. Seven elite lines with best agronomic traits including high grain yield were observed and recommended for further crosses to develop cultivars with higher grain yields and FHB resistance.
