摘要

The bulk material of the tooth is dentin, a calcified tissue consisting of a collagen matrix reinforced by calcium phosphate mineral particles. The elastic properties of dentin depend on various characteristics such as composition and orientation, as well as moisture content. A number of processes and conditions have been attributed to causing dehydration of dentin, including radiation-induced xerostomia, endodontic treatments and resin bonding procedures. Thus, there has been great interest to study the influence of moisture content on the elastic properties of dentin. Scanning acoustic microscopy was used in this study to determine elastic properties of hydrated and dehydrated dentin. It was found that dehydration increased the elastic modulus of dentin. It is anticipated that the results of this study will provide a better understanding of the effects of moisture content on the mechanical properties of dentin, thus leading to the development of improved preventative and restorative treatments for teeth.
