FM Compliance and ISO 9001-2000

The International Organization for Standardization (ISO) was formed in 1946 in Geneva, Switzerland with the intention of promoting the development of international standards and related activities, to foster the increased trade of products and services between countries. In today's global economy, it is mandatory for manufacturers everywhere to receive the most current ISO registration so that they can conduct business. Many governments and individual companies refuse to purchase materials, products or services from any entity not carrying the most current registration to ISO standards. Increasingly, many non-manufacturing organizations are also using the standard as a method to improve their internal processes so they can be more efficient and profitable and achieve higher levels of customer satisfaction. Since its inception, ISO has developed over 13,000 international standards on a variety of technical subjects. The ISO 9000:2000 standard has been implemented by more than 430,000 organizations in 158 countries. ISO 9000:2000 in the USA is governed by the American National Standards Institute (ANSI). Each country has its own governing body and relevant numbering system. Standards are reviewed at least every five years through ISO Technical Committee 176 for additions and improvements. In fast growth technological fields, interim standards can become available more quickly through the release of a Publicly Available Specification (PAS), Technical Specification (TS), Technical Report (TR) or an International Workshop Agreement (IWA).
