'Application of New Insulator, Arrester and Termination Technologies in the Modernization of a major Substation '

Why a substation renovation, why new technologies ? This report describes the reasons which led SIG, Geneva Utility, to undertake the modernization of the 130/18kV Verbois Substation, and how the process resulted in the choice of new technologies. At the turn of the century, rather than being amongst the last to choose well known, but old technologies, SIG opted for the challenge of being the first one introducing new technologies! Of course this choice implied risks, but advantages as well for the future, for instance lower costs due to reduced maintenance. The options selected even allowed to save money during the construction.
