Insulators and Interfaces

The vast majority of insulator failures, both electrical and mechanical, occur at interfaces. The cause is usually stress concentrations resulting from changes in material characteristics across interfaces. With the advent of polymer insulators, the interfaces of greatest interest are the rod/end fitting, polymer/end fitting, and rod/rubber. The experience of one manufacturer with over one million transmission class insulators in service is discussed.
