Design and Service Issues for HV and EHV Bushings with Non-Ceramic Housings and SF_6 Insulation

The Trench Group is one of the largest independent manufacturers of bushings in the world. Trench designs and manufactures high voltage bushings for all applications. This includes bushings for transformers, generators, breakers or gas-insulated substations. Every requirement can be fulfilled because the experience dates back to 1915; the first patent was awarded in 1918. In this paper some aspects of design, production, testing and service are presented at the example of an 800 kV bushing with 2000 A admissible rated continous current. This DFS 800/2000 has been designed and manufactured by Trench Germany - the former MWB Bamberg - using a composite insulator with SF_6 gas insulation. MWB Bamberg is the company who first manufactured and applied composite hollow insulators in high voltage technology. High voltage apparatus using composite insulators or insulators themselves have been delivered to customers all over the world (Fig. 1). The hollow composite insulator output of the Bamberg factory is one of the highest in the world. Now Trench Germany has more than 17 years of experience in design, production, testing and service of composite insulators as well as in their application for different high voltage apparatus - and today as well as in the future, experience will be most important.
