Previous studies on the subject of brittle fracture have concluded that boron-free E-Glass composites are more resistant to the phenomenon of stress corrosion than standard E-Glass composites. With regards to the resin system used, some studies indicate a ranking of resins with vinyl ester and epoxy being more acid resistant than polyester based polymers. However, the issue of maintaining excellent electrical properties in combination with brittle fracture resistance has only been addressed occasionally in the literature. The purpose of this study was to develop a brittle fracture resistant composite insulator core rod that also retains electrical properties equivalent to the best E-Glass polymer insulator core rod.
