The use of vapor phase odor control facilities within the collection system has becomeincreasingly frequent in recent years. However, properly sizing and locating vapor phase odorcontrol facilities within the collection system is more complicated than liquid phase (chemical)treatment alternatives. The ventilation dynamics of the collection system, and the desired zone ofinfluence of the odor control facility, will dictate the necessary airflow capacity for an effectivevapor phase odor control system. A fan test is conducted to determine the most effective airextraction point(s) and confirm the volume of air necessary to depressurize the sewers. Byextracting known volumes of air over the course of a typical diurnal flow period, it is possible tosimulate the depressurization effects of a proposed vapor phase odor control facility at the testlocation.
