Decentralized Technologies for Rural Areas of Hawaii

The North Shore Regional Wastewater Alternatives Plan (NSRWWAP) was intended to updateand revise previous wastewater planning efforts for this region of Oahu. As a departure from thetypical planning approach this current planning effort attempted to first understand the values ofthe North Shore community, and then develop technical wastewater treatment alternatives thatare consistent with these values. As a result of this process a decentralized system of treatmentand disposal is proposed. Decentralized systems lend themselves to rural, spread-out,communities particularly where the geography makes it difficult to collect and treat atcentralized facilities.
