Emergency Response Leads to Fast Track Critical Infrastructure Rehabilitation

Emergency response and effective sewer rehabilitation are not terms that are usually discussedtogether. The City of Sioux Falls, South Dakota, experienced such an event during record settingrainfall. A critical sewer collapsed that required the City to respond to prevent a serious sewagebackup. The bypass pumping system to address the immediate sanitary sewer overflows werethen immediately implemented into the selected rehabilitation alternative. Evaluation,constructability, and planning of the rehabilitation were all completed within one week of theevent. The result was a project completed cost-effectively in a 6 week period that minimizedimpacts to the citizens of Sioux Falls. The emergency response, evaluation of alternatives,construction methods and project results are presented in this paper.
