The Mystic Water Pollution Control Facility (WPCF) in Stonington, Connecticut is in need of aprocess upgrade to meet future requirements for effluent total nitrogen. The plant layout does notallow for conventional expansion and requires implementation of a biological process option thatprovides a high level of treatment in a constrained site. A desktop evaluation of small-footprintalternatives indicated that the BioMag process was the most space-efficient, cost-effective andsustainable option for implementation at the Mystic WPCF. A full-scale demonstration of theBioMag process was completed from September 2009 through January 2010 to verifyachievement of required process performance and to test the impacts of magnetite-impregnatedmixed liquor on settling, re-suspension and other mechanical aspects of successful treatment.
