Rio Tinto through its subsidiary Kennecott Utah Copper Corporation (KUC) and Praxair have implemented the CoJet~? gas injection system for copper anode refining. The system provides the capability to melt on average 60 to 70 tons of scrap copper per heat (with acceptable NO_x emissions). The system has demonstrated the potential for tuyere-less sulfur and oxygen removal using coherent jet technology. This paper describes the process concept, system development, laboratory testing, implementation, current operation and ongoing developments.
