Abstract: Broadband data from a 3-axis buried seismometer was used to develop classification algorithms to estimate relative vehicle weight and distinguish between tracked and wheeled vehicles. The automated algorithms were incorporated into a standalone detection and classification system that is written in C and hosted on a Pentium PC clone. Classifications are based on characteristics identified in low-frequency seismic spectra for a variety of ground vehicles and environments. Results from the initial spectral analysis are summarized, and details of the algorithms and their performance are presented. Absolute vehicle weight estimates, which are the focus of current efforts, may be possible given measured source levels and propagation information.!6
