Over the period of one decade, Germanischer Lloyd (GL) has developedrnand applied risk analysis procedures to assess the collision risksrnfor offshore wind energy installations (WEI). The revised GL guidelinernfocuses on the identification and assessment of collision risks betweenrnships and wind energy installations. Other risks (e.g. collision risksrnwith air traffic) are discussed, but not in the same depth as ship-WEIrncollisions. The basic approach is a pragmatic mix of formal procedurernand empirical data required for model applications. Basic assumptionsrnwere harmonized in 2004 between major providers of such risk analysesrnfor offshore WEIs in Europe. The basic assumptions and their underlyingrnreasoning are described. The guideline is an important contributionrnto ensure comparability, repeatability and transparency of suchrnrisk analysis. The guideline addresses the main factors influencingrncollision probability and damage extent, including risk control measures.rnConcepts are illustrated by applications taken from existing orrnplanned North Sea installations. While illustrative examples are allrntaken from the North Sea, the procedure has been applied more widely.
