Field data from operations of the CCGS Louis S. St-Laurent during arnperiod of icebreaking escort operations in the Gulf of St. Lawrence inrnMarch 1985 were analysed for ice loads in discontinuous ice. The bowrnof the ship was strain-gauged to measure ice impact loads. Forces,rnoperational conditions (ship speed and power), and ice conditions (icernconcentration, ice thickness and floe size) were recorded. From theserndata, time series of measured loads were used to obtain the maximumrnforce of each measured impact, as well as the impulse associated withrnit. The ship speed and a best estimate of ice concentration, floe size,rnand ice thickness were associated with each impact. Ice impact forcesrnwere related to floe mass, ice concentration and ship speed. Thernduration of an ice impact was directly related to the magnitude of thernmaximum force.
