Cross Compatibility Analyses between Native Species of China and Asiatic Lily

Selecting new genotypes of Lilium suitable for sustainable production in China was very important.Interspecific hybrids showed great breeding potential while there was cross-incompatibility difficulty.Conventional crossing method and cut-style method were used.Nine of eighteen cross combinations between native species and native species obtained ripe fruits.Fourteen of twenty-seven cross combinations between native species and Asiatic hybrids obtained ripe fruits.All nine Asiatic lily × Lilium regale combinations had no fruits.Behavior of pollen tube growth of Lilium regale in the styles show the restriction of their growth was in the whole style.Parental mating depending on cross-compatibility was the crucial base to a successful breeding program.Furthermore, reciprocal cross results were quite different.Karyotype analysis of L.concolor var.buschianum × L.pumilum, Lilium regale × L.concolor var.buschianum and L.concolor var.buschianun × L.leichtlinii var.maximowiczii showed that they were hybrids.Plant type of hybrid seedlings were matroclinous plants, intermediate plants and transgressive plants.
