The challenges in drilling hard and abrasivernformation have been studied over decades by drill bitrndesigners to improve drilling efficiency whilernreducing trips to save total drilling cost. Thernevolution of Poly-crystalline Diamond Compactrn(PDC) cutter technology and hybrid drill bit design,rnwhich combined PDC and diamond impregnated bit,rnextends bit durability and expands the applicationrnrange of drilling in highly compressive strength andrnhighly abrasivity lithologies. By having dual cuttingrnstructure of shearing with PDC cutter and grindingrnwith impregnated diamond as rock failurernmechanism, such design maximizes drillingrnefficiency in these harsh environments.rnThe first hybrid drill bit run in Indonesia was utilizedrnin the Timor Sea and recorded the highest Rate ofrnPenetration (ROP) in the field. The 8-blade, 13 mmrncutter drill bit successfully drilled into the PloverrnFormation which is known for having very hard andrnabrasive formation consisting of interbedded shalernand sandstone with unconfined compressive strengthrnof more than 25 kpsi. After the first successful run,rnseveral hybrid drill bit runs took place in the samernfield.rnIn this application, the use of hybrid drill bitrntechnology improves ROP performance and reducesrnoverall cost. Previously, it would typically require arnnumber of PDC, roller cone, or impregnated bits withrna turbine drive system to reach target depth.rnAt the design stage of the hybrid drill bit, PDC cutterrntechnology and innovation played an important rolernin the design process.rnCutter technology was specifically optimized tornprovide superior abrasion and thermal resistance,rnselected to overcome the high abrasivity of thernformations. With higher thermal resistance of PDCrncutter properties, a hybrid drill bit cutter canrnwithstand a higher temperature while maintaining itsrnmicrostructure properties to avoid premature cutterrndamage which in turn extends bit durability.
