Special aspects of applying the term “non-contact method of measurement” in monitoring of passive quantities

The article attempts to form an adequate understanding of the term “non-contact method of measurement”, the definition of which is absent in actual documents on standardization. The contrast in the use of the term for active and passive quantities is demonstrated. The details of applying the term in the presence and absence of sampling, and during non-destructive testing are considered. The difference of terms “non-contact method of measurement” and “non-invasive method of measurement” is shown. Specifications of the concepts “contact”, “element of measuring instrument” and “measurement object” in respect to the conduct of non-contact measurement are presented.
