The core-shell structured carbon nanotube-polyaniline nanocomposites were prepared successfully by ultrasonically assisted in situ polymerization. The morphology and microstructure was characterized by Scanning electron microscopy (SEM), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), Raman spectroscopy and X-ray diffraction (XRD). It is shown that the presence of multi-wall carbon nanotubes with minimal defect during the polymerisation of aniline caused the formation of a more planar conformation of polyaniline, which acted as a coating layer for the carbon nanotubes. By varying the ratio of aniline monomer and carbon nanotube, the different thickness of polyaniline layer can be obtained. The resulting nanocomposites depend on sites-selective interaction between the π-bonds of the aromatic ring of the PANI with the graphitic structure of MWNT, which facilitates charge-transfer between the two components. Improvements on electrical conductivity were observed for all nanocomposites.
