Poly (tert-butyl methacrylate) (PtBMA) macromonomer with one vinyl end group per polymer chain was synthesized by chain transfer free radical polymerization in the presence of 2-mercaptethanol as chain transfer agent and end capping reaction with p- chloromethyl styrene. In the chain transfer free radical polymerization, the molecular weight (3000~ 8000) of PtBMA oligomer was well-controlled by the feed amount of 2-mercaptethanol. In the end capping reaction, tetra-n-tutylphosphonium bromide (TBPB) was used as phase catalyzer and potassium hydroxide (50%) as the absorbent of HC1. The introducing probability of the vinyl end group measured by NMR was dependent on the p-chloromethyl styrene amount and TBPB amount used. The molecular weight and chemical structure of the macromonomer was characterized by gel permeation chromatography with light scattering detector (GPC- LS), NMR, respectively.
