Study on Preparation and Characterization of the Epoxy Resin/TLCP Composites

A new kind of liquid crystalline epoxy resin (PHQEP) containing ester mesogen was used to modify the conventional epoxy resin (E-51). The liquid crystalline property of PHQEP was characterized by means of POM. The mechanical property, thermal stability of E-51/DDS/PHQEP system was investigated too. Experimental results revealed that PHQEP is a typical of nematic liquid crystalline polymer, the impact strength of PHQEP/E-51/DDS (with a 5wt.% of PHQEP content relative to E-51) is 2.6 times of E- 51/DDS, and the onset deformaton temperature (Td) of PHQEP/E-51/DDS obtained by TGA can be 10℃ higher than that of E-51/DDS. The detail reasons for the improvement are that PHQEP owns a superior compatibility with convention epoxy resin and rigid mesogenic units orientation was fixed in the epoxy nets during the curing process.
