Supposedly this international conference is,in part,a retirement party in recognition of my researh contributions to the subject of the fatigue of materials.If this be true,then a unique opportunity is presented for me to pay my respects and tributes to those colleagues alongside whom I have worked on fracture problems at various times during the past 30 years.Obviously an over-view that includes work on: fatigue crack initiation,limitations of elastic fracture mechanics,fatigue at notches,biaxial-multiaxial fatigue,non-proportional cyclic loading,fundamental faigue limites,environmental effects,creep-fatigue interactions,surface treatments,and ice fracture problems must be brief in the extreme and exclude much work done in collaboration with many friends who,although perhaps not quoted in the References,will always be in my mind.For these failings I ask your forgiveness and forbearance.I shall make amends in the bar on Tuesday evening!
