Abstract: Transuranic (TRU) and low-level drum waste disposalinvolves decisions based on transportationrestrictions, conditions for acceptance, and federaland state regulations. To support the decisions madeconcerning final disposition of these wastes,characterization protocols must be established to helpdefine the environmental impact. One promisingscreening technique involves applying near infrared(IR) Fourier Transform Raman (FT-Raman) spectroscopyusing remote fiber optic probes for identifying unknownsalts, sludges, and solids in wastes. It is proposedthat FT-Raman spectroscopy be used in conjunction withreal-time radiography and visual documentation.Developing an extensive solid waste library is a keyelement in the deployment of this technology in theprocess environment of solid waste drums. Thefeasibility for such library generation is alsodemonstrated. !4
