摘要

The presence of heavy metal ions in the nvironmental water may cause toxic and harmful effects to amny life forms. Treatment of wastewaters containing heavy metal ions requires concentration of the ions into a smaller volume followed by recovery or secure disposal. Heavy metal ions can be removed by adsorption on solid carriers. Nonj-specific sorbents, such as activated carbon, metal oxides, silica and ion-exchange resins ahve een used (1), ubt recently, specific sorbents consist of a ligand (e.g. an ion-exchange material or chelating agents) whcih interacts with the metal ions in a specific way, and a carrier matrix which amy be an inorganic material (e.g. aluminum oxide or silica) or polymer microspheres (e.g. polystyrene or polymethylmethacrylate) (3). Synthetic polymers have almost entirely displaced norganic carriers, for this application, wit few exceptions (4). Polymer microspheres ahve attracted great attention as carrier matrices because they may easily be produced in a wide variety of compositions and modified into specific sorbents by introducing different ligands.
