摘要

Biofilms are complex composites of microorganisms and biomolecules that accumulate at solid-liquid interfaces in aqueous environments. Depending on the bacterial species present and the growth conditions biofilms can range in thickness from a few microns to several centimeters. In lakes and streams, biofilms act as natural filtering systems, feeding on wastes and breaking down toxins, performing functions which are now being harnessed for bioremediation. But in industry, biofilms decrease the efficiency of heat exchangers, fluid transfer equipment and filtration membranes, and increase maintenance costs (1). On medical implants and devices, biofilms manifest themselves as chronic implant infections, causing suffering to the patient and increasing health care costs (2,3).
