Au Nanowires and Their Field Emission Properties

Free standing Au nanowires are successfully fabricated by the solid-liquid-solid (SLS) growth mechanism; the titanium and gold buffer layers were deposited respectively on the substrate by the E-gun evaporation. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) study indicated that the morphology of Au nanowires is needlelike with lengths up to 10 μm, the average diameter of Au nanowire is about 100 run; the surfaces of the as-synthesized Au nanowires are smooth and neat. The single crystalline Au nanowires exhibit outstanding properties with the current density more than 0.1 mA/cm3 and a reproducible value of the field enhancement factor is close to 10,000.
