Analysis of Tele-Traffic Performance in Integrated Satellite-Terrestrial Mobile Networks

This contribution addresses the problem of computing traffic performance of a cellular network overlayed by a satellite system coverage. A hierarchical architecture is assumed, which forces every new call to be directed first to the lower tier. The access to satellite resources is allowed whenever the terrestrial coverage becomes unavailable or a blocking condition occurs. In a rather general system model, with inter-system handovers and inter-spot handovers, the expression of major performance measures, i.e. the probability of blocking, probability of forced termination and probability of uncompleted call, is derived for the integrated system. An efficient policy for satellite resource management is then considered, that allows to increase traffic capacity of the integrated system, while meeting grade of service requirements of any user in the system. Performance results are provided and discussed, as obtained by taking typical parameters of satellite constellations of practical interest. A further issue concerns the investigation of various methods for accurate characterization of traffic overflow from the lower tier.
