On the Capacity of UMTS Satellite Component

This paper investigates on the influence of power constraint on the capacity of the satellite component of UMTS, assuming a Wideband CDMA radio interface. The capacity analysis is here developed with the aim of outlining the noise limiting effect which is to be expected in a satellite mobile access. In other words, the power efficiency is here considered in addition to the spectral efficiency, which is the typical figure of merit of a terrestrial system. Some numerical evaluation has been carried out for different orbits and frequency bands of a multispot coverage, giving insight about the systems which are expected to be interference limited or noise limited and about the achievable capacities.
