The paper discusses computational techniques which attempt to invert analysis methods by evaluation load levels corresponding to a cyclic loading history for which some, prescribed limit to the mode of behaviour is satisfied. The method relies upon a nonlinear programming upper bound method which involves the evaluation of a sequence of conventional linear solutions with spatially varying moduli. As a result the method may be implemented in a commercial finite element package. The paper describes the theoretical basis for the method and its application to classic shakedown problems of perfect plasticity and creep deformation problems. A set of typical examples are described which have applications in life assessment methods.
