Slip-ring and brush assembly is used in almost all large electrical alternators and motors. Proper brush contact is extremely important in prevention of flashover, arcing and brush wear. In the present study an analytical model of dynamics of slip-ring and brush system has been developed. Excitation from the slip-ring irregularities and support of the brush holder has been considered. Nonlinearity due to loss of contact of the slip-ring and brush has been incorporated in the model. The proposed model of nonlinear dynamics of slip-ring brush assembly has been numerically simulated. Observation of the analytical model shows that stub configuration of the brush has instability resulting in very large contact force. This observation is demonstrated through simulation results also. The proposed model can effectively be used for optimal design of the brush assembly of the alternator/motor to achieve desired performance and reliability.
