The first fully implantable pacemaker was placed in a person in 1958 . The first artificial pacemaker implantation a dog was described more than 40 years ago2. Since that time, the history of artificial cardiac pacing has seen a long line of innovation resulting in a constantly evolving field of medicine. In veterinary medicine, the most common reasons to place; artificial cardiac pacemaker are atrioventricular (AV) block (2nd degree and complete) and sinus node dysfunction/sick sinu: syndrome3. However, pacing therapy is not a 'one size fits all' practice and some options and considerations for pacemaker type, lead location and programming are important for patients with different types of bradyarrhythmias which require artificial pacing.
