SYSTRAN Chinese-English Machine Translation System

SYSTRAN has been developing MT systems since 1968. In August 1994, SYSTRAN began development of its Chinese-English system. Based on SYSTRAN'S well-defined and systematic paradigm, work was begun according to a procedural checklist or "recipe" for new systems. Chinese is the first Sinitic source language to be developed at SYSTRAN, and thus it contains a number of items that had not been encountered earlier in SYSTRAN'S development of other languages. This paper outlines the basic paradigm of SYSTRAN'S on-going Chinese-English machine translation system. An overview of the SYSTRAN MT development strategy as it relates to development of Chinese-English is given in the first section of this paper. In the second section, there is discussion of the challenges in developing an MT system for a language from a new language family; strategy and viewpoint of some of the Chinese linguistic issues are also presented. In the final section, there is an account of SYSTRAN'S progress to date, and its aim for future development.
