Enhancing tactical skills in soccer: Advances from the Naturalistic Decision Making approach

Since few years decision-making in team sports began to be studied through a Naturalistic Decision-Making (NDM) approach. In this communication, we overview findings from our research on team sports performance from this naturalistic perspective. Recognition-Primed Decision (RPD) and Team Situation Awareness (TSA) are well-known models of expertise in complex and dynamic environments, and have been applied in team sport settings. The results showed that experts use intuitive decision-making by recognizing spatiotemporal configurations, and share these configurations of play when need to be coordinated. Considering the need for Coordinated and Intuitive Decision-Making in team performances, our research has implications for designing tactical skills training in team sports. Research on tactical skills training in team sports has increased in recent years. Early works mainly focused on investigating Teaching-Games-For-Understanding's (TGFU) effects on explicit learning. More recently, researchers argued that team games training could benefit from the use of Small-Sided-Conditioned-Games (SSCG) for practicing and implicit learning. Based on these insights, a significant proposition from our program of work is that a training task in team sports needs to represent the realistic constraints from a competitive situation (e.g., time pressure, uncertainty), and that technological artefacts should be provided to players by highlighting relevant and shared configurations of play. Thus tactical skills learning could benefit from both of implicit and explicit feedbacks in a small-sided positioned game.
