A Study of Implications of Using Importance Measures in Risk-Informed Decisions

This research deals with implications of using traditional Probabilistic Risk Assessment (PRA) importance measures to rank plant components in success space, and to evaluate the performance of the plant in the context of safety. The most frequently used importance measures are briefly addressed. The applications of them are compared in success vs. failure spaces along with their mathematical definitions, meaning and interpretations. A simple example has been presented. The commonly used importance measures are primarily for applications in the failure space, and sometimes are neither realistic nor consistent in terms of meanings and interpretations in the success domain. These issues are explored in the context of both ranking and categorizing structures, systems and components (SSCs).
