In this paper, it is evaluated the electric field at the ground level of a 220 kV overhead transmission line and the corresponding busbars in a substation, under the capacitor bank switching-off effect. The simulation was performed using the EMTDC/PSCAD software package, to obtain the transient overvoltages in the transmission line and in the busbars. These computer programs present an efficient graphical user interface integrated with a time domain integration tool, which can be used successfully to simulate power system transients, including network control devices. It provides fast, accurate and flexible solutions, by applying the integration trapezoidal rule to solve the mathematical models. The electrical field was calculated using the CIGRE equivalent charge model. Finally some conclusions that provide a valuable contribution to the understanding of the electric field distribution in a substation due to the capacitor bank switching-off effect will be pointed out.
