Hydrocyclones are widely used in chemical engineering ,mineral processing and oil industry, etc. Despite the simplicity in terms of its construction, the internal fluid flow pattern is very complex and high turbulent flow condition exists in it. Therefore, the study of the turbulent flow in hydrocyclone is of great importance for further understanding the flow field. In this paper, by using a new type of laser Doppler anemometer, named the particle dynamics analyzer (LDA/PDA), the distribution of the mean and the turbulence velocities at the selected position were measured directly. Some new observations of turbulence property were made from the experimental results and the relationship of the turbulence and hydrocyclone performance was discussed.
